The spa has wide steps that make it easy to enter and exit this great feature. The illuminated spa and pool appear to connect in the evening with your eye traveling all the way out to the mature tree canopy at the farthest reaches of the property.

A final aerial shot illustrates the many programming elements that our design fits onto the site.
Items from the client’s wishlist (including pool, cabana, firepit, bulkhead, dock, play lawn, cooking and dining) all have their place. The thoughtful layout maximizes opportunities for their large family to gather and entertain.

A warm and inviting view from the street highlighting the strong symmetries created by the cobblestone inlays and natural stone light piers. A tall row of Thuja plicata ‘Green Giant’ ensures privacy all-year round, while the (6) Crape Myrtle Trees provide an alee along interior driveway entrance with accent lighting to create a warm welcome from the street.

Looking NE standing on the walkway directly behind the parking spur. This shows the various hardscape materials working together and the steps/platforms that were “pulled” wide to mirror the dormers. This view also shows the modern pathlights that surround the walkway.

1-Standing behind the half circle sectional sofa in the firepit “nook”. The custom built natural gas firepit has a single 2” thick piece of bluestone as the capstone. Looking out past the Adirondack chairs to the pool and outdoor kitchen island with cedar pergola the mature evergreens and trees create a lush surround of privacy.

All four spaces of this terrace are accessible to the home and to each other. The overall feeling is spacious despite strict setbacks. The newly planted Crape Myrtle is visible in the furthest corner of the space.

Looking north towards the new parking garage, we see the interplay of stately original hospital building (Nash) to the right, the main hospital building to the left, the blue all-weather awning, the bright yellow umbrellas in the dining space, and the events pavilion behind them. We chose all site furnishings, materials, and finishes from the trash receptacles to the plants, to the stucco color on the Nash building.

The Japanese garden involved complicated grading and drainage installation as well. We created multiple mockups of the glass mulch, trying out different depths and colors of the glass for the best illumination effect. We also used mockups to determine the decomposed granite path and the purposefully rusted steel edging with the landscape architect, lighting designer and homeowner. All materials had to be in perfect harmony. The glass swathes hide perforated pipes underneath to ensure the lower garden area doesn’t hold water runoff. To maintain the landscape architect’s ethos, while respecting the budget set by the client, we sourced a semi-custom steel edging material, and we were able to tailor it to form these sinuous shapes. Our metal craftsperson heat-bent and welded the curved forms on site, adding extensive cross bracing to support the parallel edges and lighting bands layered under the glass mulch.

Aerial photo displays the complexity of the site. Layers of plantings were installed thoughout, including on top of retaining walls. Tight quarters with heavy construction traffic led to logistical challenges during installation.
